Troubleshooting & FAQ

Quick fixes for the things players hit most once the game is running. Click a problem to open it.

While playing

Illustration: a farmer repairs a fence with a hammer while a chicken watches.
  • Slow load? Normal. Stay in the window.
  • Villagers at home? Normal on their first day.
  • A fix needs a command? Type it in the SMAPI console window that opens beside the game.
  • Co-op trouble? Almost always mismatched setups.
The game crashes while loading

Loading is slow with this many mods, especially the first time and when you start a new farm. Stay in the game window until it finishes; alt-tabbing or clicking away can crash it.

New villagers won't leave their houses

Normal on the first day they're added. Their schedules load the next day.

There are two of the same villager

A base-game bug can split some modded villagers, usually when you talk to them while they're walking. Load your save, type this into the SMAPI console window, then sleep:

debug removenpc SenS

Replace SenS with the villager's internal name. They come back as one the next day.

The Community Center cutscene won't trigger
  • Enter Pelican Town from the bus stop
  • Spring 5 or later in Year 1
  • Between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm
  • Sunny, and not a festival day
  • In co-op, only the host can trigger it
I can't craft something even though I have the ingredients
  • Check Better Crafting's quality filters in Mod Options.
  • Check the ingredients' quality matches.
  • Favorited items may be held back from crafting.
Dusts bought on Ginger Island don't show up in crafting

Until the mod is updated, add the recipes from the SMAPI console:

debug craftingrecipe GiEXredux_GrowPlaceholder
debug craftingrecipe GiEXredux_PurifyPlaceholder
debug craftingrecipe GiEXredux_GoldPlaceholder
debug craftingrecipe GiEXredux_VoidPlaceholder
debug craftingrecipe GiEXredux_RevivalPlaceholder
I can't leave the house, or the farm looks broken

Make sure your farm map mod is enabled and that only one farm map is active.

Co-op

Two pixel-art farmers with identical seed bags and matching chickens.
  • Same collection, same mod versions, same settings for everyone.
  • Each player starts a solo farm once before joining.
  • Agree when to update to a new revision, together.
  • Sword & Sorcery's last dungeon is single-player only.
Crashes, no cabins, or "farm not found"

Almost always a mismatch: different mods, versions or settings. If one player updated and the other didn't, both need the same revision. Multiplayer Mod Sync can check loadouts at launch.

Can't create a multiplayer game

Make sure your store launcher (Steam, Xbox app and so on) is running before you start the game.

A quest won't move forward

Some quests, notably in Ridgeside Village, only advance when the host does the step. If it still stalls, restart the session and check your SMAPI log.

The game closes right after launch with a controller plugged in

The SMAPI console can grab controller input and get closed by accident. Click once into the game window after launch, or switch the controller on after the game has started.
